Check Your Settings to Ensure Breakout Rooms, Polling, Whiteboards, etc. are Active

(These are optional.You need to do this one time only.)

Room Settings (Click to Expand)

    1. Go to https://psu.zoom.us/.
    2. Click the Sign In button.
    3. Log in via WebAccess if needed.
    4. Click the Settings menu choice.
    5. Scroll down to Polling. Ensure the slider next to it is active (blue).
    6. Scroll down to Always show meeting control toolbar. Ensure the slider next to it is active (blue). (Optional but highly recommended).
    7. Scroll down to Whiteboard. Ensure the slider next to it is active (blue).
    8. Scroll down to Breakout Room. Ensure the slider next to it is active (blue). See Getting Started With Breakout Rooms for more information.
    9. Scroll to Nonverbal Feedback. Ensure the slider next to it is active (blue).

Once your settings are correct your can use advanced features of Zoom to improve your virtual session.

How to Create Breakout Rooms in Zoom

Create Breakout Rooms (Click to Expand)

      1. Ensure your settings are correctly set to allow you to have access to the breakout rooms feature. If you do not please see the instructions above for turning on the right settings.
      2. In the Zoom room, click the Breakout Rooms button in the control strip.
      3. Decide how you want to group your students. Do you want them to be automatically grouped by Zoom, or do you want to set them up with specific people (manually)?
      4. Select the appropriate radio button for your choice.

If you chose automatic Breakout Rooms:

      1. Do some quick mental math. Based on the number of students you have in your class, how many rooms will you need to get them in the number of people you wish to be in each group. Example: 48 Students, 4 per room, would be 14 rooms.
      2. Enter the number of rooms you need in the counter box.
      3. Click Create Rooms.
      4. A list of rooms will appear.
      5. Click options to decide on a few specifics about timing.
      6. Click Open All Rooms to send students away to meet in their breakout rooms.

If you chose manual Breakout Rooms:

  1. Do some quick mental math. Based on the number of students you have in your class, how many rooms will you need to get them in the number of people you wish to be in each group? Example: 48 Students, 4 per room, would be 14 rooms.
  2. Enter the number of rooms you need in the counter box.
  3. Click Create Rooms.
  4. A list of rooms will appear.
  5. Find the blue text that reads Assign. Click on it to bring up a list of students.
  6. Put a check mark next to each student you want in the group.
  7. Click options to decide on a few specifics about timing.
  8. Click Open All Rooms to send students away to meet in their breakout rooms.
